Over the past four decades, national healthcare systems have undergone transformative changes of historic significance. The Italian National Health Service is at a critical juncture, grappling with the urgent need to reform in response to the challenges posed by change – challenges that have hitherto been neglected: an ageing population, technological innovation, a shortage of resources, shifts in clinical and organisational paradigms, and socio-economic inequalities.

È di questi temi che si discuterà a 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮 𝗶𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗼 𝟭° 𝗮𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗲, in occasione della presentazione del n. 2/2025 della rivista “𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗮 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮”, intitolato “Le Sfide per il Sistema Sanitario Nazionale”.
The volume, edited by the guest editor Professor Vincenzo Atella (University of Rome Tor Vergata and leader of the DARE ‘Impact Analysis, Policymaking, Upscaling’ working package), offers an in-depth analysis of the structural reforms needed to align funding and service delivery with the actual needs of the population. We are pleased to note that the essays featured in this issue were made possible thanks to the funding from DARE.

Among the various contributions, we would like to highlight the speech by the President of the DARE Foundation, Professor Lorenzo Chiari (Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna), che ha firmato per questo numero insieme al Prof. Atella il saggio “Digital Disruption in Healthcare: What It Means for the NHS”, esplorando come la trasformazione digitale possa e debba diventare una leva di sostenibilità ed equità per il sistema.

The significance of this publication will be formally recognised at the Policy Panel, which will involve: walter bergamaschi, Director-General for Planning and Healthcare Construction Ministero della Salute; Dario Focarelli, General Manager ANIA; Maria Rosaria Marino, Head of Sectoral Analysis Parliamentary Budget Office; Angelo Tanese, General Manager Agenas – National Agency for Regional Health Services.
